A man was airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon following a crash on a stolen motorbike.
Yesterday morning, a young lad informed both the police and his community that his 125cc motorbike had been stolen. Just an hour later, the man — who stole the lad's bike — had an accident at the Clifton Road junction at around 1pm (yesterday). An eyewitness said: "As the rider approached the junction, he checked behind him and lost control of the stolen bike. He skidded across the road and hit a wall."
Two ambulances were first to arrive on scene with paramedics administering CPR on the severely injured man, who had life-threatening injuries. Around 5 minutes later, a fire engine arrived to help the paramedics and clear up any debris and petrol. Several police officers also arrived on scene and were desperately trying to disperse the crowd of worried bystanders and witnesses. A police officer shouted at the crowd, demanding they "move away" and "give the man some privacy".
An air ambulance arrived on scene — landing behind the War Memorial — and safely transported the man to hospital.
The owner of the motorbike was in attendance and said: "I hate the man for stealing my bike, but I wouldn't wish this on anyone."
