Locals are only entitled to off-peak bus travel in West Sussex but can still use their WSCC passes anywhere in England during the locally/nationally permitted times, a Stagecoach South bus driver has revealed.
Different bus operators interpret the local/national travel restrictions differently with many drivers letting people on irrespective of time. However, each individual company has its own policies, so residents shouldn't expect to be allowed to use their passes during the prohibited hours while outside of West Sussex.
English bus passes are not able to be used outside of England or on private bus services, according to Stagecoach.
If you feel that you would benefit from free bus travel and/or cheaper train fares, please contact your local council to discuss your elegibility. Alternatively, if you live in London or another major city, you may be eligible for a freedom pass — which would entitle you to free bus, train, tram, and tube travel within London — from TfL. Freedom passes can be used as English bus passes if they display a red rose.
